AES FACILITIES IN GUAYAMA PUERTO RICO

The tour

Benefits

IEEE, the world's largest technical  society, proudly  invites you to visit the AES Power Plant facilities in Guayama PR.

The participant will learn about the general aspects of the operation of a electricity power plant. Specifically, the participants will be introduce to the "Fluidize Combustion Bed" technology as part of the process of generating energy from the burn of coal stone. Finally the participants will see how this private energy production facility is tie to the PR electrical system, and how both system are kept and maintain as a whole.

AES Puerto Rico

Registration

AES Puerto Rico is a energy production facility located in Guayama PR. The plant has a net capacity of 454.3 MW using boilers heated with a technology known as "Fluidize Combustion Bed" for the burning of coal stone. The main component of this generation plant are: the steam generator, the system for the cleaning of combustion gases, the turbo generator, the cooling system and the main output transformer. The fuel (coal stone) caloric content is between 11,000 and 13,000 BTU/lbm.

The 230kV switchyard has 6 elements in a breaker and half configuration. The power plant is connected to the PR electrical system through a sectionalized part of a 230 kv line running from Aguirre to Yabucoa.  The AES Power Plant is completely integrated to the main PR electrical system components including the economical load dispatch and the system frequency control system.

As part of the process of complying with all goverment regulations regarding the environmental protection, AES use sand stone as a solvent to absorb the sulfuric bioxide generated in the combustion process avoiding its entrance to the atmosphere. In order to maximize this absortion process the combustion chamber is keep to a temperature of near 1550 F. Also there is a electrostatic precipitator that by means of a 70 kVdc electrostatic field, ashes are removed from the combustion gases. These are just a few of the many technics used by the plant as part of the process of cleaning all the used material.

The facility provides electricity under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). As the first solid fuel-fired plant on the island, the facility greatly reduces the electrical system's dependence on fuel oil. AES Puerto Rico also produces and sells up to 400,000 pounds per hour of steam to Phillips Puerto Rico Core Inc., a subsidiary of the Phillips Petroleum Company.
